Endodontics - Enzo Yuruvich dental practice
A root canal, also called root canal treatment, aims to remove the tooth’s pulp when there is irreversible damage to the tooth.
What is a root canal?
A root canal is a dental treatment performed when the nerve of a tooth is damaged or infected. During this procedure, the affected nerve is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to prevent future infection. This helps to restore the damaged tooth and relieve pain.
This treatment removes the nerve and vascular endings responsible for the sensitivity and pain we experience in our teeth.
When is a root canal necessary?
In most cases, the nerve of a tooth is removed when it has been infected due to:
- Deep caries: this is the most common cause. After attacking the enamel and dentine, the decay, or bacteria, can contaminate the third layer of the tooth, the pulp.
- Trauma: sometimes, due to accidents, cracks, or falls, the tooth must be endodontised. Indeed, if the tooth is broken in half, the still living part is exposed and penetrated by bacteria, leading to irreversible infection. Root canal treatment prevents bacterial infection that could spread through the roots, and could develop into an abscess.
All teeth can be root-canaled: incisors, canines, premolars and molars, both in the upper and lower arch.
Sometimes it may also be necessary to root canalise a wisdom tooth, but this is not very common, as when these teeth decay or become infected, they are usually extracted.
Root canal treatment in Estepona
In our clinic, the root canal treatment process is carried out in the following way:
First, we will administer a local anaesthetic to avoid any discomfort. Then, we open an access through the tooth in order to reach the root of the tooth.
We precisely measure the length of the root and proceed to clean and widen it with small files.
After disinfecting the root with antiseptics we proceed with the root filling using a thermoplastic material. The tooth must be perfectly sealed to prevent further infection.
At the beginning, at the end, and sometimes also during the procedure, an X-ray is taken to check the result of the operation.
Sometimes it is necessary to install a dental crown to cover and protect the tooth.
This treatment is usually carried out in a single session. However, if the tooth is badly infected, we may schedule a preliminary session to apply an antiseptic.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is normal to feel some discomfort after a root canal. Generally, this lasts for a few days, but if it persists after a week, it is very likely that the treatment has failed. You should visit the dentist immediately, as the cause of the pain is probably an infection.
Common symptoms that may require a root canal include persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling in the gums near the affected tooth, or a visible injury to the tooth.
The time required to complete a root canal treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case. In general, it can be completed in one or two visits to the dentist, but in more complicated cases, it may require multiple visits.”
